1913 – 1923: Soaring Beginning
The company was founded in 1916 with the intention of producing airplane engines, which it did until 1918 and then again from 1933 to 1945. However, BMW's history can be traced back to 1913, when Karl Rapp started Rapp Motorenwerke, an aircraft engine manufacturer. In 1917, the firm was renamed Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW), and it began making motorcycle engines with the R32 model in 1923.

1929 – 1948: The Setback
In 1929, BMW produced its first automobile, the BMW 3/15. During World War II, BMW's automobile production was halted, and as part of the allied occupation of Germany after the war, the company was prohibited from making motorbikes or automobiles. This restriction was revoked in 1948, and it resumed production with the BMW 501 premium vehicle.

1950 – 1961: After the Storm
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, BMW expanded its product line and introduced a number of popular models, including the BMW "New Class" line of small sedans like the BMW 1500, the BMW 1800, and the BMW 2500, as well as a line of sporty coupes and convertibles, beginning with the BMW 700 in 1959 and the BMW 3200 CS in 1961.

1970 – 2000’s: Decades of Luxury
In the 1970’s, BMW expanded its product range to include luxury vehicles and introduced the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan in 1977. The BMW 5 Series mid-size luxury automobile was also released in 1972 and is still a company best-seller today. In 1999, BMW also began manufacturing of the BMW X5, the company's first SUV, and in the 2000’s, the company increased its SUV collection with the release of the BMW X3, BMW X6, and BMW X1.

2013 – Present day: The Green Entry
BMW has also worked on creating electric and hybrid vehicles in recent years. In 2013, it introduced the BMW i3 electric car, followed by the BMW i8 hybrid sports car in 2014. Besides that, it has also released plug-in hybrid versions of some of its most popular models, including the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, and BMW 7 Series.
